Steelers Take Running Back In 1st Round Of Latest Mock Draft

It’s mock draft season! With no NFL games happening and the draft approaching, the internet is buzzing with predictions. While these mock drafts are just educated guesses, they’re always fun to break down and debate.

NFL Media Analyst Daniel Jeremiah recently dropped his latest mock, and he has the Pittsburgh Steelers taking Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty with the 21st pick. Seeing that pick instantly brought back memories of when the Steelers drafted Najee Harris in the first round.

I’ve never been a huge fan of drafting a running back in the first round unless he has the potential to truly be a game-changer. Najee Harris has been solid, consistent, and reliable, but I never saw him as that type of player. On top of that, the Steelers had bigger needs at the time that should have been prioritized.

Jeanty, though, looks like he could be special—very special. He fits right into the Steelers’ current team-building philosophy. They’ve been working on strengthening both sides of the line of scrimmage, and they’ll likely stay with that trend. But if a playmaker like Jeanty is still there at 21, he’d be tough to pass up. As Daniel Jeremiah put it, “The Steelers spent the past two drafts beefing up their offensive line. Now they land a top-five player in the class to run behind it.”

It’s no secret the Steelers are taking a page from the Eagles’ playbook, focusing on dominating in the trenches. Along with controlling the game at the line of scrimmage, the Eagles also have elite talent at the skill positions, headlined this season by Saquon Barkley. Could Ashton Jeanty be the Steelers’ version of Barkley? Adding Jeanty in the draft could be a major step in bringing the Steelers closer to building the roster they are aiming for.

It’s still early, and mock drafts shouldn’t be taken too seriously, but they sure do make for some interesting discussions about the future of this team. Whether or not the Steelers go with Jeanty if he’s available, adding a dynamic playmaker to this offense is definitely something that needs to be done.
