Steelers signing CB Darius Slay in free agency
The Pittsburgh Steelers had remained quiet in the early stages of the NFL’s legal tampering period, but that changed in the early afternoon when it was reported the team was bringing in a veteran cornerback. After several other veterans signed with other teams, the Steelers have reportedly gotten their guy.
According to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report the Steelers are signing veteran cornerback Darius Slay.
The veteran cornerback has yet to be officially released by the Philadelphia Eagles, but other sources, like ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, have stated there is interest between the two parties.
Slay is a 6x Pro Bowl player who could help the Steelers secondary in a variety of ways. While most admit he is at the end of his career, he is coming off a 2024 season where he helped the Philadelphia Eagles win a Super Bowl. But, to be more specific, Slay played in 14 games, had 13 pass defenses, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, and 49 total tackles.
In his career, Slay will be entering his 13th year in the NFL. Drafted in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft by the Detroit Lions, slay played seven years in Detroit or he made three pro bowls final three years. In all he played in 103 games with 94 starts and had 19 interceptions in Detroit. Playing the last five years in Philadelphia, slay added three more pro bowls where he had nine interceptions in 74 games with 73 starts.
How he fits into the Steelers defensive scheme has yet to be known, but will be interesting to see how the team continues to address the position this offseason.
It is worth noting none of these deals can be made official until Wednesday when the new league year begins, so things can change quickly.
UPDATE:
The Steelers have made the signing of Slay official, signing him to a one-year deal worth $10 million dollars, fully guaranteed.

Be sure to stay tuned to SCN for the latest news and notes surrounding the Steelers as they prepare for the rest of free agency and the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.
I can’t wait to see Coach Smith’s analysis on this and how he fits in our defensive scheme!
Not huge fan of signing a guy for year 14 at CB.
Well, is this a redo of Patrick Peterson?
$10 million fully guaranteed for a 34-year old CB gives me some pause. However, if he plays at a high level, he can prove he is worth it.
