Steelers reportedly have inquired about trading for Trevor Lawrence

The Pittsburgh Steelers have found themselves in quarterback purgatory since the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger in 2021. Quarterbacks like Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett, Justin Fields and Russell Wilson have all gotten their shot at claiming the job as the starting quarterback, yet no one has stood out among the pack.

As for the organization, it is being reported they are leaving no stone unturned when it comes to finding the answer to their quarterback question, and that includes a big-time trade.

It is being reported by Ryan Burr the Steelers have been in talks with the Jacksonville Jaguars about a potential trade for the former 1st overall draft pick. According to Burr, the Steelers would be willing to ship their 2025 1st and 2nd Round draft picks to the Jaguars for Lawrence.

This from Burr’s official Twitter/X account:

At this juncture, this is nothing more than a report and rumor; however, if there is even a hint of reality in this report it would be a huge decision by the team to finally answer their quarterback query. Nonetheless, some might argue Lawrence wouldn’t answer the question at all, and hasn’t proven he is a top tier quarterback in the NFL.

Since being drafted, Lawrence has a 22-38-0 record with 63.3% passing. He is coming off a 2024 season where he suffered several injuries, one being a shoulder injury which ended his season after just 10 games.

JAX isn’t going to trade away their QB when they don’t even have their GM in place yet. I get that would be a time for the Steelers to ask, I just don’t see any reality to this coming together before that issue in Jacksonville is set.

Don’t do it. Lawrence is not as good as Fields. They have continuously surrounded him with talent and the Jaguars are still awful. The draft capital would be worth so much more than the return on the player.

Just when I think the history between these two organizations can’t get any more weird or surprising…they totally redeem themselves.

Just trying to wrap my brain around this. Would JAX entertain an offer? Must be some smoke there for PIT to reach out. Maybe Lawrence isn’t crazy about playing for a 29-year-old OC. Maybe Liam Coen thinks he can package picks from the Steelers with the Jags pick at #5 to move up to #1 overall and draft Shedeur or Cam Ward.

Interesting, but I wouldn’t hold my breath on it.

Lawrence might be the most overrated QB in the league. His offenses have had respectable talent, and he has not brought them to the next level. Hard pass, stick with Fields. I don’t want to pay him that contract.

Trevor Lawrence was projected to have a very high ceiling when he left Clemson. I do need to ask, however, is he good enough to truly elevate the Steelers? I’m not so sure about that. Coming to Pittsburgh, Lawrence would arguably have less offensive talent to work with than he did last season with the Jaguars, and so I don’t see him magically producing more than he has been in Jacksonville.
I like the idea of Fields over Lawrence because Fields has much greater mobility, which could come in handy on a squad who is still looking for talent at skill positions and has a young offensive line. Keep Lawrence in Jacksonville, please!

I have said over and over again about Justin Fields that the dude has started 44 games in the NFL and there is really no reason to think that he will suddenly get better starting with his 45th game. Well, Trevor Lawrence has started 60 games in the NFL. At some point you are what you are no?

Trevor Lawrence has been a fine QB here and there. He is a competent NFL quarterback. He clearly isn’t “franchise elevator”, though.

Hey, a first and a second round pick for a QB who will provide about 10 years of competent QB play really isn’t a bad price so it’s not like the proposed trade would be a terrible one. It reeks of continued “slightly above mediocrity” though. It’s not exactly reaching for the stars.

Read very carefully:

“This directly from the horses mouth in the Jags organization. WOW!”

This is the Jags trying to build up trade value for their mediocre QB. In all likelihood, they’re just lying to drum up hype for the guy so they can trade him away and get a ton of picks for yet another rebuild. This has absolutely nothing to do with the Steelers and a trade between these two teams won’t happen.

The Steelers might just be the easy team because they’re rumored to be in on everyone, which makes it more believable.

I am going to BS on this one. A struggling QB coming off of a shoulder injury? I pass especially at this cost. Plus Jax will be on the hook for a lot of dead money. They “owe” him a ton of money.

I don’t like this move at all. You’d just have a differently flawed less mobile QB at top dollar QB price, and have to give up draft capital for him. No. If he was released I be calling, but he ain’t getting released.

I get you have to ask, but Fields is the best value for this team. He has his flaws, but will be several very good free agents cheaper than TL, and offers the most of all available QB’s in terms of athleticism. Get the deal done NOW.

To be clear, I would ONE HUNDRED PERCENT trade a 1st and 2nd round pick for Trevor Lawrence. Also, to be clear, I don’t believe this rumor for 1 second.

I should clarify I don’t believe the Jags would consider it. Not that Omar didn’t try to reach out.

I honestly miss these discussions. I remember when Trevor was entering the draft coming out of Clemson. I absolutely loved the kid. All the upside in the world. I suggested that the Steelers trade TJ to Jacksonville for first overall pick and select TL. Commenters lost their minds. They screamed to the Heavens that the Steelers would never win again without TJ. Years later, I ask again. What have the Steelers won with Watt? Nada! Not a single playoff game in his ccareer. He’s been fun to watch, and he has made alot of money. That’s it.
The roster is top heavy. Far too much money on a overrated and underperforming defense. No where enough talent on offense. Plus too many drama queens.
Give me Lawrence. Outstanding character with no drama concerns. Lawrence and Fields both went to bad franchises for developing QBs. I would be happy with either young man starting for the Steelers next season.
If he Steelers view Trevor as the best option, pull the trigger.

I was with you. I love TJ Watt, but I still think they should move him. They wouldn’t get what they could have, but he’s the most valuable piece they have for gathering draft capital.

Bingo! Winner, winner, chicken dinner. You have to think outside the box in the modern NFL. Sometimes they work out, sometimes they don’t, but you must be willing to change when necessary.
The bigger the risk, the bigger the chance for a franchise altering occurrence.
Nobody even knew who Mean Joe Greene even was, but Dan Rooney, Bill Nunn, and Coach Noll definitely did.

Trevor Lawrence is 60 games into his career and has a 22-38 record with a 63% completion percentage and a 69/46 TD to INT ratio. Better than what the Steelers have had but still not a playoff winning QB.

All that said it doesn’t mean that the move would be wrong to do. Sometimes you have to jump in the deep end.

Excellent observation 👌 Sink or swim. If not, you will spend your whole life watching from the sidelines.

I would say that contract could be one of the worst in the NFL, I would stay as far away as possible. I would stick with the Fields plan and look at the 2026 draft (unless Stafford is available)
