Steelers hiring New Castle native Scott McCurley as new ILB coach

The Pittsburgh Steelers have seen a couple pieces of their coaching staff depart for various reasons. In Aaron Curry’s case, he chose to go to the New York Jets rather than stay in Pittsburgh. It was a situation which left the Steelers searching for an inside linebackers coach. Friday evening it was reported by Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the team is hiring a local product to fill Curry’s vacated role.

The coach they decided to hire was none other than New Castle native Scott McCurley. This from Dulac’s Twitter/X account:

After attending the University of Pittsburgh and playing linebacker there, McCurley stayed on staff after graduation as an assistant. McCurley originally joined another Pittsburgh area native Mike McCarthy with the Green Bay Packers in 2006 as an intern, this before being named Coaching Administrator the following year. He was hired to that position on February 3, 2009. On February 10, 2014, it was announced that McCurley was promoted to linebackers coach of the Packers. After the departure of Kevin Greene as outside linebackers coach, it was announced Winston Moss would take over as coach of both the inside and outside linebackers, and McCurley will assist in whichever area he is needed.

In 2020 he again followed McCarthy to the Dallas Cowboys as the team’s linebackers coach, a job he held until this offseason when the Cowboys and McCarthy decided to part ways.

Of all McCurley’s accolades, the one which likely pains Steelers fans the most is the fact he was a defensive quality control coach on the Super Bowl 45 Green Bay team who beat the Steelers in dramatic fashion.

Nonetheless, McCurley returns closer to home, and hopefully is capable of helping the inside linebackers up their games in 2025 and beyond.

I have no idea what to think about this. Anybody willing to tell me how I should feel?

I freaked a little because I didn’t have my glasses on, and thought it was Todd Haley!
