Steelers finalizing a deal for former Eagles RB Kenneth Gainwell

The Pittsburgh Steelers haven’t done much in free agency so far, unless you are counting losing their own free agents, but the team is reportedly finalizing a deal with former Philadelphia Eagles running back Kenneth Gainwell.

The report comes from Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz:

Gainwell, who backed up the league’s best running back in Saquon Barkley, is a versatile, fast back who can absolutely thrive in Arthur Smith’s zone blocking schemes. In 2024 he played in all 17 games, had 290 yards on 75 carries, but also had 16 catches for 116 yards and 1 total TD.

While those are modest stats for the former Memphis player, he still has plenty of tread left on his tires and should fit a dual back system will with Jaylen Warren. Despite the signing, it is safe to say the Steelers will very much still be on the lookout for a running back in the 2025 NFL Draft. If the Steelers are able to get another running back, the backfield of Warren, Gainwell and a rookie could be quite formidable if the offensive line can take another step forward in their progression.

This signing shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone when you consider Assistant General Manager (GM) Andy Weidl and his time in Philadelhia. Weidl would have been in the Eagles front office when Gainwell was drafted in the 5th Round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

The financial details of the deal weren’t known at this time, but be sure to stay tuned to SCN for the latest news and notes surrounding the Steelers as they prepare for the rest of free agency, and the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.
