Steelers create more salary cap space by releasing Larry Ogunjobi
The Pittsburgh Steelers entered the legal tampering period of the NFL league year with over $60 million dollars in salary cap space. That number took a hit when the team traded with the Seattle Seahawks for wide receiver DK Metcalf. With their cap space shrinking after the trade, and giving Metcalf a new deal, the team created more space Monday by releasing defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi.
According to Dale Lolley of Steelers.com, the team is cutting Ogunjobi, which will create roughly $7 million dollars in salary cap space. This should put the Steelers around $50 million dollars in space with plenty of moves left to be made.
As of this being written, the Steelers have taken a very patient approach to the first day of the legal tampering period, not yet making a move. However, you have to think they have a plan in place when they create this amount of money. As has been stated before on multiple podcasts, you don’t cut ties with an Ogunjobi unless you need the funds.
The Steelers still have to sign a quarterback, which will put a hefty dent in the remaining salary cap space, but they’ll also need to make other veteran additions to complement their current roster.
When you cut ties with Ogunjobi, you are also creating a hole on the roster along the defensive line. The team will have to fill that vacancy in a variety of ways, with the 2025 NFL Draft being very deep with the defensive linemen entering the selection process.
Be sure to stay tuned to SCN for the latest news and notes surrounding the Steelers as they prepare for the rest of free agency, and the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.
With all this cap room being created, I’m starting to suspect either a massive TJ contract or two or three more smaller contracts in the near future.
