Steelers Burning Question: How far have you gone to see a game?
Last season I did the Friday Night Steelers Six Pack and wondered if it was worth doing further. After all, interaction was not great, and sometimes you just have to adjust. So I decided to call an audible, and not just abandon the Friday night meeting of the black-and-gold minds.
Instead of six questions, I wanted to focus solely on one question.
We’ll still do the preamble of what you’re eating/drinking/listening to, but we’ll focus our attention on the one Steelers question of the week. Don’t worry, most weeks I’ll do a bonus/extra credit question for fun. With all that out of the way, let’s get to the question!
How far have you traveled to see a Steelers game?
As a little look ahead, on this upcoming Monday “Let’s Ride” podcast I have a guest on from overseas, and he tells the story of his travels to the United States in October of 2024 to see a game. It made me think, how far have you gone to see a Steelers game?
For me, the furthest I’ve probably traveled to see the Steelers play was from my current residence in Maryland to Pittsburgh to see a game at then Heinz Field. To be honest, I haven’t seen the Steelers play in-person too many times, I can count them on one hand actually, and most of the time I was in relatively easy driving distance to see them play.
What do you think? How about you? Let us know in the comments section below!
As for what I’m eating, it’s homemade soup and salad. As for drink, it’s always store bought kombucha, as usual, and the tunes will be whatever my family wants to hear!
Happy Friday everyone!!
I’m eating wontons and drinking Pepsi zero. Exciting.
I’ve traveled a whopping 1 hour to go see the Steelers. (I live an hour north of Pittsburgh.) The farthest I’ve ever traveled for any game? South Carolina to see my daughter play softball.
Farthest I’ve gone was Cleveland. We also live in Maryland and try to go up to Pittsburgh one or two games a year if we can get good tickets for reasonable prices. In 2010, my wife was looking for tickets and thought she was looking at the Steelers Browns at Heinz Field and the tickets were really cheap. After she bought them, we realized they were for the Jan 2 game against the Browns in Cleveland.
We went antway, but that had to be the coldest game I ever attended in my life. I think it was about 10 degrees that day. Steelers needed to win the game to clinch the AFC North so they were playing their starters.
They ended up winning 41-9 starting with a Polumalu INT on the opening drive and including a Hines Ward TD in the end zone right in front of us.
Coulda been a worse trip.
Drinking some Guinness as I prep for a possible trip to Ireland. Catching up on the weeks missed fsn and scn podcasts.
I had a buddy in St. Louis that was a huge Rams fan. He was so angry that we took the whole city over. I was in my glory. The Pirates were good, the Steelers were good, and I was in Cards/Rams country surrounded by black and gold. Toured the Budweiser factory, visited the zoo, and had an awesome time. Me and another buddy are seriously considering the Ireland game/experience this year.
Beleevers!!! Welcome my man!
I bet being able to rub it in Cardinals fans faces was nice…they can be obnoxious lol
Thanks. New place looks awesome. Well done.
It was an awesome trip, i believe we were ahead of the Cards in the standings at the time and I’m sure I was super obnoxious about it.
I actually saw a Steelers firetruck tailgating in downtown St Louis, it was great.
Fantastic stuff!
We’ll get to that point again as Pirates fans…just not sure if it will be in my lifetime lol
Not till ownership changes.
For me it was Detroit for XL and Tampa for XLIII. Say right behind MC Hammer in Tampa.
Man, what were those Super Bowls like in person?!
Didn’t have a plan for either. I am in State College, picked my brother up in Grove City drive to Sandusky got up in the morning and when we hit Michigan bought a newspaper to fund parking. Parked in a garage at Ferris State for $7. Took a shuttle to Ford Field for $3 each. Bummed around Detroit all day.
Blast of a game. Don’t remember the Stones at half time at all.
When we left there was about 4″ of new snow. Drive back to Youngstown on roads like a skirting rink. Then home in the mooring.
Tampa was a little more planned, but we ended up parking a couple blocks from the stadium in some ladies yard for $20. I ran out right before halftime for bathroom and concession. Came back just to catch Deebo scoring. When we left we ran into Franco on the walk back to the car.
Super Bowls are long days but always nice when you win.
We take the blame for losing in Dallas to Green Bay because we opted to not go.
That’s awesome to be at those games!
From Maryland to Pittsburgh. Went in 2009 when they lost to the raiders and then my dad and I went to Ben’s final home game. We’ll never forget that last game. Was back and forth on whether or not we should go since neither of us are big on crowds. So thankful we went.
I’m assuming the Acrisure staff let fans stick around after the game, right? Or did they push you out as usual?
We stayed haha. Was pretty close to where he was walking around giving high fives. It was really cool
Being Valentines Day, dinner was my wife’s choice. I’m the one who does all the cooking so it wasn’t like she was getting time off or anything. She chose Chick-fil-a, so that means I’m drinking what my family calls “liquid gold” aka CFA sweet tea.
I’ve only been to NFL games in Baltimore, Washington (Landover, MD) and Pittsburgh. From my current residence, Pittsburgh is the farthest. I would love to watch a game out of the country in 2025, especially since I haven’t been out of the country in over 20 years, but I don’t know about pulling that one off.
I walked in snow, but mostly ice from Crafton Heights to the North Side.
Working and traveling last night so I didn’t get to play.
Had a turkey sub that was surprisingly good for a gas station.
Drank Coastal Love, from Wicked Weed, it was fine.
No music, vegged out watching gear head shows.
When I still lived in PA I traveled to Baltimore to see the Steelers. That was one of the Ravens first seasons, Kordell Stewart got the win, and I got the last laugh! Ironically I moved to Baltimore a couple years later, and been here since.
Travled way more for my son’s sports. I’ve been all over the country, and even to Canada twice. I miss those days!
Since I live in TX, I guess my 2008 driving trip to the ‘Burgh was it! Myself and a huge Packers fan friend drove from central TX to a Sunday day game in Lambeau. Then it was off to Pittsburgh for a Thursday night game against the Bungles. On the way we stopped in Canton for the HOF and spent one night in Slippery Rock at the beautiful Evening Star motel. Then it was the Wm Penn downtown, Primantis, a brewpub in an old Catholic Church, funiculars and walked to the game that night. 29° in the upper deck and so many layers of clothes covered by my Bleier jersey, man it was cold to a Texan, maybe the first time at a sporting event without a cold beer! Enjoyed the town so much that I flew up with the wife years later and took in Falling Water and another game. We were in the Steelers hotel and rode down the elevator with David DeCastro!
Man, what a trip that sounds like it was!! And what an experience! Did the Steelers win the first game at the conclusion of that trip??
Both the Packers and Steelers won, and The Packers were pretty bad that year. But the Steelers turned out to be pretty darn good as I recall!
For me it’s been 11 miles–from my home to Lincoln Financial Field. Sadly, I probably will have to travel farther if I ever want to see the Steelers win a game cause it seems like the Steelers can’t win in Philly. Went in 2022 and 2024 and probably won’t go again as all three boys have now been to an NFL game.
Way back in 1996 or 97 I was visiting some college friends in Indiana, PA and they surprised me with a day trip to Steelers Training Camp–got a Bettis autograph–so that’s the longest I’ve traveled to see the Steelers.
I drove 2 1/2 hours to see the Steelers play the Oilers at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis. The week before the game, the Steelers clinched their playoff seeding, and they sat almost all of the starters. So I sat in the cold rain to watch the backups lose to a terrible Oilers team by the thrilling score of 16 – 6. Still loved every second of it. Steelers Nation showed up and I was finally part of a crowd twirling terrible towels and chanting “Here We Go”.
