Steelers bring back OLB Jerimiah Moon

The Pittsburgh Steelers are continuing to add players to their 90-man offseason roster. On Thursday, it was reported by NFL insider Aaron Wilson of KPRC in Houston that the Steelers have re-signed outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon on a one-year contract.

What is curious about the re-signing of Moon is the fact he was an exclusive rights free agent (ERFA) with the Steelers this offseason. As an ERFA, the Steelers held the rights for Moon on a one-year deal at the league minimum with no signing bonus. But as the new league year approached, the Steelers did sign ERFA Ryan McCollum but no deal for Moon had been announced. After the start of the league year, Joe Rutter or the Pittsburgh Tribune Review reported the Steelers did not tender Moon.

Bringing Jeremiah Moon back now raises the question of his current contract. Is it simply what he would have received had the Steelers simply signed him as an ERFA? Is he now making more? These are questions that are not known at this time.

As for the player, Jeremiah Moon went undrafted in the 2022 NFL draft out of Florida and landed with the Baltimore Ravens. After spending a year on their practice squad, Moon was on and off the practice squad in 2023 where he appeared in eight games with one start where he had 12 tackles from 99 defensive snaps and 142 special team snaps.

During the 2023 playoffs, the Ravens released Moon in order to bring tight end Mark Andrews back onto the 53-man roster, and it was believed they hoped to get him back on the practice squad. Instead, the Steelers claimed the Moon off waivers, even though they had themselves been eliminated from the postseason.

In 2024, Jeremiah Moon appeared in 13 games with one start for the Steelers where he had nine tackles on 111 defensive snaps and 222 special team snaps.

UPDATE: The Steelers officially announced the signing of Moon to a one-year deal.
