Steelers add depth along offensive line by claiming a guard off waivers
While the Pittsburgh Steelers have made several moves this offseason which have addressed holes on their roster, they still needed some help in the trenches, both offensively and defensively. Monday it was made public the Steelers picked up some interior offensive line depth, mainly offensive guard, by claiming a player off waivers.
Lecitus Smith was released by the New England Patriots, and, according to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Steelers picked up Smith to help add to their depth at the guard position.
Two players the #Patriots cut recently were claimed off waivers today: Guard Lecitus Smith is headed to the #Steelers, while LB Curtis Jacobs joins the #Titans.

Smith was a 6th Round draft pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals out of Virginia Tech, and he has had quite the journeyman career since entering the NFL.
After failing to make the Cardinals 53-man roster his rookie season, Smith also was signed by the Houston Texans for six days, the Philadelphia Eagles on a Reserve/Future contract, the Green Bay Packers practice squad in 2024, and finished last season with the Patriots after he was signed off the Green Bay practice squad.
Smith has a lot of experience, but has yet to find a place he can call home for any duration of time. Could Pittsburgh be a place he could flourish, even as a back-up guard?
For those wondering, the signing of Smith won’t impact the Steelers compensatory formula, as Smith was released by the Patriots. Therefore, for those who feel the Steelers are keeping the compensatory formula on the forefront of their minds with moves made this offseason, this would fall into line with that theory.

Hard to be truly excited by this pickup, but depth at guard does fill a need. Right now it looks like the plan is to replace Seumalo in next year’s draft.
