Steelers add a defensive tackle, make other moves official

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced several additions to their offseason 90-man roster on Wednesday, one of which was not previously reported. The Steelers announced they have added defensive tackle Esezi Otomewo to the roster.

A fifth round draft pick in the 2002 NFL draft by Minnesota Vikings, Otomewo has only appeared in nine career games with two starts. After appearing in five games his rookie season with the Vikings where he had five tackles, Otomewo spent the 2023 season on the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad. In 2024, Otomewo appeared in four games for Jacksonville with two starts where he had four tackles, 0.5 sacks, and one fumble recovery.

With only 179 defensive snaps through three seasons, Otomewo is not a player who is in any way a lock to make the Steelers 53-man roster come September. After the release of Larry Ogunjobi this offseason, the Steelers have yet to add a defensive tackle who is expected to make a significant impact. There is still time in free agency, and Steelers also will have options to add to the position group in the upcoming draft.

The Steelers also officially announced the additions of defensive tackle Daniel Ekuale and safety Juan Thornhill.

The more they make these depth defensive line signings, the more I think they draft 2 d lineman, one of them being round 1. The other as early as round 4. Seems like all of the guys they have signed are more so guys battling for a helmet on game day. Not to say I don’t like these moves, but if you’re looking at it as a pitching rotation, Cam is your 1, Benton and your 1st round pick are 2 and 3, you then have a bunch of 5th starters in Loudermilk, Ekuale, and otomewo. Drafting a 4th rounder to be the number 4 guy seems like something that could work. Idk. Just my thoughts
