Russell Wilson joins the New York Giants in free agency
The Pittsburgh Steelers have seen a tremendous amount of roster turnover from their 2024 roster, and the most recent departure was one of their bigger signings last offseason. After just one year Russell Wilson is now a member of the New York Giants.
This per ESPN’s Adam Schefter:
ESPN Sources: The Giants and Super Bowl-winning QB Russell Wilson reached agreement today on a one-year deal worth up to $21 million, including $10.5 million guaranteed. Wilson joins the Giants, this after the Giants signed Jameis Winston in free agency. It is expected for the Giants to be in the market for a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft, but how Wilson ties into that equation has yet to be seen.
As for compensation, the contract is for one-year with $10.5 million dollars guaranteed.
For those who thought Wilson could return to the Steelers in 2025, that likely would have been a last resort for the team, this after there was a reported rift between Wilson and the organization. A rift which made it seem extremely unlikely for that to happen in any circumstances.
When you look at Wilson’s stats in 2024, they look as if he still has a strong grip on his game. He finished last season with the following stat line:
Completion: 63.7
Yards: 2,482
TDs: 16
INT: 5
Rating: 95.6
However, as the season continued, Wilson’s play started to slip. He appeared in 11 total games in 2024, this after injuring his calf prior to the start of training camp, and ended the season with a 6-5 record. The 5 losses all came in the same stretch to end the season, the final game being a horrible loss to AFC North rivals the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card Round of the AFC Playoffs.
For the Steelers, the options around the league are slim for Aaron Rodgers, if he chooses to play in 2025. After his visit with the Steelers front office last Friday, a decision on his plans could be coming. Then again, it could be another few weeks before he decides what he wants to do in the near future.
Lastly, for those who are paying close attention to the Steelers compensatory pick formula, the contract Wilson received will help the Steelers, but there is still a lot to be deciphered based on how much Wilson plays in New York this season.
Be sure to stay tuned to SCN for the latest news and notes surrounding the Steelers as they prepare for the rest of Free Agency, and the 2025 NFL Draft.
I’m sure some will question the guaranteed money, but I am going to hold judgement, and comment, until I see what the Steelers give Rodgers…assuming he plays in Pittsburgh this season.
I really think the narrative around Russ and the Steelers would be different if they didn’t start 10-3 and have to face that brutal schedule at the end. That really gave many fans false hope. Sprinkle those games around the season and who knows what the pulse of the fanbase /qb situation is. I hope the best for Russ.
Glad to Wilson gone. Should’ve kept Fields.
Glad to SEE Wilson gone

My bad. Thx Dave
a true Pittsburgh Steelers fan, since the 70’s I’m glad that Russell Wilson sign with the New York Giants and I still don’t want Aaron Rodgers
One year at $10.5 million really isn’t bad for a starting QB. That tells me the Steelers were really ready to move on. I expected him to get a deal very similar to what Fields got. It will be interesting to see were the Steelers end up.
Jeff & Dave,
I’ve been watching you & Brian on your YouTube channel since you began. Love your shows.
Since this article discusses the QB situation, can I ask a potentially dumb question about QB’s currently in the league?
Q: Do you know of any quality, young backup QBs on other teams that the Steelers think highly of ( as in starter potential ) and whose contracts may be up this year or next?
Just wondering if there are other QB possibilities that have gone unexplored so far.
