Re-signing Mason Rudolph Makes Sense
In a crazy week in the NFL offseason and with free agency well underway, the Pittsburgh Steelers, who were expected to resign Justin Fields or Russell Wilson, have not yet done so. Fields decided to sign a 2-year, $40 million contract with the New York Jets. Wilson is still a free agent at this point. Sam Darnold, Gardner Minshew, and Daniel Jones have all found new homes. Negotiations with Aaron Rodgers are continuing, but he still has not signed. In the midst of all of this, Mason Rudolph signed a 2-year, $8 million contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He and Skylar Thompson are currently the only two quarterbacks the Steelers have under contract.
Rudolph got a lot of heat from fans while in Pittsburgh, as many fans were frustrated with his play and felt that he wasn’t talented. They just plain did not want him in black and gold. With that being said, one can make the argument that Rudolph provided the best quarterback play for the Steelers as a starter since the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger. Russell Wilson’s first few games as a starter the last 5 games of 2024 were not pretty from Russ and company.
While this may be a hot debate within the fanbase, I actually like the Mason Rudolph signing. I think it makes so much sense for 2025. Why? Rudolph came cheap. Is he the long-term answer at quarterback? Never say never, but the likely answer is no. I don’t believe any of the other quarterback free agent options were the long-term answer, either. While Aaron Rodgers is a future hall of famer, he is an aging veteran that tends to drag along with drama and baggage. His price tag is millions and millions more than that of Rudolph. Russell Wilson also has a significantly higher price tag. Thinking about it this way, why would a team want to pay a large chunk of change to a quarterback they know isn’t the answer? By signing Rudolph, should negotiations with Rodgers fall through, the Steelers have a quarterback for 2025 with a minimal cap hit. They can use the extra funds they have to extend star players such as TJ Watt and to bring other players in to build the roster.
Why besides price do I like this signing? While Rudolph is likely not the long-term answer in Pittsburgh, I believe he is a competent starter in the NFL. He has the experience and the arm talent to manage games for a team and at least make them relevant. He is also familiar with the Steelers, and, likewise, the Steelers are familiar with him. This could help significantly in terms of locker room leadership and game planning. While Mason Rudolph and Arthur Smith have yet not worked together, when I consider the two of them, I think about Ryan Tannehill during his time in Tennessee. It could be argued that Tannehill was more athletic in his prime than Rudolph, and he certainly had a higher draft pedigree. However, I personally consider them similar in terms of them both being competent, but not elite, starters in the National Football League. When Arthur Smith worked with Ryan Tannehill, they found a lot of success in Nashville, including a deep playoff run to the AFC championship. Smith’s run-first offense, a stud of a wide receiver in AJ Brown, and a game manager of a quarterback in Tannehill proved to be a successful formula. Could there be a similar story in Pittsburgh with Rudolph, DK Metcalf, and a not yet complete running back room? Perhaps.
Reports state that the Steelers still have a strong interest and are pursuing Aaron Rodgers. Say Rodgers, or someone else, does come to Pittsburgh, Rudolph will make a capable backup as well for the reasons discussed above. Regardless of who else is brought into the Steelers quarterback room, bringing Mason Rudolph back to Pittsburgh for 2025 makes a whole lot of sense.
I agree with you. Our Oline needs to come together for protection and the running game. Mason didn’t have much protection in his first stint with us. He is a class act versus Rodgers who is a class ass. We re not going to win the bowl next year but we can do as you predict.
You bring up a really good point! While I think he deserves some of the criticism he received, Rudolph truly never got a true shot as the Steelers starter for a season. In his stint in 2023, I actually thought he played well enough to at the very least have a secure job as a backup QB in the NFL. He throws a great deep ball, and if he is given the chance, he has some beasts of men at wide receiver to throw to.
Rudolph can sling the rock, might be a good thing with the WR group the Steelers have now. The line will have to protect him because he is a pocket passer.
Let’s cross our fingers and hope the offensive line can perform well as a cohesive unit. I talked a little bit about some potential similarities between the 2025 Steelers offense and the offenses that Arthur Smith had in Tennessee. But the one thing Smith had in Tennessee was a really good offensive line to help open holes for Henry and to give Tannehill time. If Pittsburgh can get the o-line right, I think we will at least be competitive for a wild card spot.
If the Steelers take advantage of what Mason does well and build an offense around those skills he might surprise some people.
If Mason ends up the starter I’d love to see him under center a lot, in a run favored offense with lots of play action, and a passing game that actually uses the whole field.
I would love to see some more play action this season, too. Admittedly, I have always been higher on Rudolph than a lot of the Steelers fanbase. He is better than he’s gotten credit for thus far in his career in my opinion.
Yeah. I feel the same. What I would do the moment I get the definitive from Rodgers is go get Becton. Draft the best DL you can in Rd 1 and add another good RB in rd 3. With that cast uninjured, I think the Steelers could actually go further than most think.
As an original member of the “Mason Rudolph Fan Club”, I actually prefer if they tell Rodgers to buzz off, draft a developmental guy, continue to add strength to the roster where able, build the offensive set around Mason’s skill set and forge ahead! If it doesn’t work out? Draft your QB next year and do it again!
I’m with you here! I would much rather they just ride with Mason until they find a quarterback that they truly believe could be a franchise guy. Until then, why not just build the best roster you can with a serviceable quarterback that will keep you in games and give you a chance?
100% Sadie!
*This*.
Spot on – you said what I was thinking better than I could.
I am perfectly fine with mason, skyler and a mid round draft pick for the season while building up the rest of the team. Not sure how many extra wins Rodger’s brings and we saw what wilson can or can’t do.
Mason throws a nice deep ball and we have two deep ball catching wide receivers.
1000%. I could be proven very wrong, but I honestly don’t want any part of Aaron Rodgers. There’s no denying his talent, but I would pass.
Actually, at this stage of his career, I think you *can* deny his talent. He’s not a schlub, but most of the Rodgers hype is based on who he was *before* – before he turned 40, before he blew out a ligament, before he stopped even pretending to care about outcomes.
Rodgers in 2025 is not that guy. I’m going to deny his talent and bet that even if he does come back – for anyone (please, God, not the Steelers), he won’t last the season.
Interesting take! I can’t say I completely disagree. He definitely isn’t who he was 10 years ago.
I agree.
He’s very competent backup+.
His professionalism may counterbalance Pickens’ immaturity.
