Potential Double Dip Position Options For The Steelers
Generally, during the NFL offseason, teams focus on addressing multiple needs across their rosters. For the Steelers, this offseason feels particularly crucial, as several position groups require multiple outside additions to fill key holes. These needs could be addressed not only through free agency or trades but also in the draft.
Quarterback is widely regarded as the Steelers’ biggest need, but there’s a strong chance it will be handled in-house with free agents Justin Fields or Russell Wilson. However, other key positions will require multiple external acquisitions during the team-building process.
Defensive Line:
After processing the Super Bowl it is clear that investing constantly in elite defensive line talent is key to the success. The blueprint formed by Eagles is something that has seemed to be followed by the Steelers since they poached Andy Weidl from the Eagles. With the Steelers investing heavy in the offensive line the first two off-seasons of the Khan – Weidl era it seems like their attention will be zeroed in on beefing up the opposite side of the trenches.
Not only does the Steelers’ philosophy suggest they may double-dip at this position, but the lack of talent on the interior also reinforces that idea. With only Cam Heyward, who will be entering his age-36 season, and Keeanu Benton, who just completed his sophomore campaign, as the most notable names entering the 2025 season. It would be surprising if the Steelers didn’t match an addition of a notable free agent acquisition, with and investment of a first or second round pick into the defensive line, to bolster the unit with high end talent.
Potential free agents:
- Milton Williams
- Javon Kinlaw
- Levi Onwuzurike
- Osa Odighizuwa
Potential Draft Picks:
- Walter Nolan
- Kenneth Grant
- Darius Alexander
- Deone Walker
- T.J. Sanders
Wide Receiver:
Generally speaking, the Steelers have done a solid job of finding talented wide receivers, but for one reason or another, they often struggle to keep them on second contracts. As a result, the team has lacked depth at the position for the past two seasons, with George Pickens being the only true difference-maker—though his play has had its ups and downs.
Entering the 2025 offseason, acquiring two or even three impact players at the position will be crucial, especially depending on what the organisation decides to do with Pickens. The group not only lacks high-end young talent but also veteran leadership and proven production, which has been noticeably absent in recent seasons. Dipping into the pro market via free agency or trade could help address that need taking pressure off the younger pieces within the room. However, given the severe lack of depth, the Steelers must also invest high-end draft capital—potentially even a Day 3 pick—to round out the group with promising talent.
