Former Steelers QB Kyle Allen goes to the Detroit Lions
The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback situation is certainly fluid heading into the 2025 regular season, and one quarterback many fans hoped would return in free agency was Kyle Allen. Allen spent the 2024 season with the Steelers, and, while not being called upon much, was an ideal QB3 on the depth chart.
For those who thought that would make sense for the Steelers this offseason, it wasn’t meant to be. Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network reports Allen is signing a contract with the Detroit Lions to back-up Jared Goff.

There is a strong chance the Steelers were in talks with Allen about a return, but when the team signed Mason Rudolph to a two-year contract Thursday, Allen saw it was a sign to move on.
With Allen out of the mix, the Steelers are still searching for their finalized quarterback room. QB1 remains vacated, Rudolph as the QB2 and Skylar Thompson will have an opportunity to compete, potentially with a draft pick, for the QB3 role. Will Aaron Rodgers be the QB1 this season, or will it be someone else? Considering how Rodgers has taken his time so far this offseason, we might not have an answer to that question anytime soon.
