Art Rooney II chimes in on the Steelers and Aaron Rodgers situation

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Aaron Rodgers have been their own sort of soap opera this offseason as the organization awaits Rodgers’ decision on what he plans on doing in 2025.

Will he retire?

Is he waiting for another team, like the Minnesota Vikings?

Does he just want to not attend/participate in offseason workouts?

When will he sign, if he chooses to do so, with the Steelers?

All these questions have been asked since the quarterback dominos have fallen in place. That place for the Steelers is having Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson on the roster, and no one else. Sunday and Monday both Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan weighed in on the Rodgers situation at the NFL league meetings in Florida.

Now, it is team president Art Rooney II’s turn to give an update on the Rodgers situation. According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, who is at the league meetings, Rooney said he is feeling good about Rodgers, and how the two parties are “pointing in that direction”.

This from Dulac’s official Twitter/X account:

Tomlin stated the team had no hard deadline for Rodgers to make his decision, but Rooney continued and gave some clarification on what the head coach said to media earlier this week. Rooney added the Steelers will not wait “forever”, but they are fine waiting “a little longer” for Rodgers to commit one way or another.

When it comes down to it, the Steelers want Rodgers to be committed to both the game, and the team, if/when he chooses to sign. That would be a large reason why they are choosing to wait and be patient throughout the process.

In the meantime, fans and media alike will await Rodgers’ decision on what he plans to do in 2025. So be sure to stay tuned to SCN for the latest news and notes surrounding the Steelers as they prepare for the rest of free agency, and the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.

If they sign Rodgers, they’ll probably be doing about the best they can do at QB this year— at least until they have a chance to draft a young QB with star potential. Rodgers doesn’t appear to have lost much in terms of accuracy, but maybe his arm isn’t quite as strong as it used to be. He’s still a very savvy field general who ought to be a significant upgrade from Wilson.

In any case, it’ll be a minor miracle if Rodgers plays a full season and the Steelers are able to advance beyond the first round of the playoffs. Considering their scant options at this point, adding Rodgers at least would make this an interesting season for the Steelers.

I don’t think it really matters with their CAP situation, and they have the ability to get a lot more pretty easily.

I think with Rodgers the biggest thing is his desire to get hit. It seemed pretty low in 2024. He still threw for almost 4,000 yards and 28 TD’s.

I don’t know if he is in this draft, but I would like to see them grab someone late that has some kind of elite traits. You never know what a ceiling might be if those guys find the secret sauce. You know a guy like Mason Rudolph has a for sure ceiling.

How do we know Rudolph has a ceiling with the minuscule amount he played for us with Fichtner/Canada as his coordinators and Ben as his “mentor”?!

He has put enough tape out. He isn’t an elite processor, he doesn’t have elite physical traits (size/speed), and his arm is mediocre. To be a successful starter you need something to hand your hat on.

Interesting in the way that a horrific car crash is interesting. Everyone slows down and gawks, but they’re *all* thinking “Thank God that’s not me.”

I have to disagree with the idea that Rodgers is the best option. He is a shell of himself and his presence and attitude will drag the rest of the team down. How have we learned nothing from his disastrous run with the Jets?

I am profoundly disappointed in the Steelers that they are even entertaining the option, much less dancing to his tune.
