Aaron Rodgers waiting game has provided him another option

Throughout this offseason many experts and fans have wondered what the future will hold for Aaron Rodgers. After being released by the New York Jets, there were many teams who were rumored to be interesting in signing the former Super Bowl champion. However, those options quickly dried up as the quarterback dominoes started to fall.

Just weeks before the 2025 NFL Draft, and the only team who sits as an option for Rodgers has been the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Rodgers met with the Steelers two weeks ago, yet there has been nothing official in terms of commitment. Mike Tomlin, Omar Khan and Art Rooney II all said they were hopeful Rodgers would sign, but no one knew if/when he would do so.

Why was Rodgers dragging his feet? What’s the hold up?

Maybe he was waiting to see if another option would open up, and it might have happened Friday afternoon when news broke of New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr suffering a shoulder injury which might affect his 2025 season.

While many thought Rodgers options were only the Minnesota Vikings and the Steelers, the Vikings have stuck with their current quarterback room, the Steelers wait patiently, but now it is safe to say the Saints become an option for the Rodgers services in 2025.

Now, this doesn’t mean Rodgers will sign with the Saints. It also doesn’t mean he’ll sign with the Steelers. However, what it does prove is Rodgers waiting game might be working in his favor.

At this juncture no one knows what is keeping Rodgers from signing with anyone. Is he mulling around retirement, or is he waiting to see if other options open up? If that’s the case, he certainly isn’t sold on what the Steelers are selling, as it pertains to the current roster and potentially from a contractual standpoint.

The next logical question isn’t how long will Rodgers wait, but how long will the Steelers wait? Will the Steelers not want to get into a bidding war with another team and just move on with Mason Rudolph as their quarterback? The sad thing is, no one knows, but the potential season-ending injury to Carr certainly makes this situation more interesting.

Stay tuned to SCN for the latest news and notes surrounding the Steelers as they prepare for the rest of the offseason and the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.

Yea, sign a 42 year old washed up QB. Yea, that’s the ticket!

Didn’t Big Ben mention this as a possibility on his podcast the other day?

Man, this Rodgers saga is rather disappointing to me. Absent some soon to happen plot twist where the Steelers end up holding all the cards, I’ve lost some respect for the whole organization over this. I wish they’d have told him “were not playing the games you like to play. Here’s the offer, either take it or counter in a week or were done here.”

Anywhere or anything else but Pittsburgh, please and thank you. New Orleans can have AARod and Shedeur. Good times.

If it’s not Aaron Rodgers being added to the QB room, do you think they will add a different veteran to the roster? What other veterans are out there at this point in time? If Rodgers doesn’t sign before the draft, do you think they’ll draft a QB and if so, what round?

Kind of hard to swallow…veteran Carson Wentz, but here we are. I agree with Jeff on drafting a QB, camp needs a minimum of 3 to function, preferably 4, and an emergency QB3 for the season is also needed. Hard to see Skylar Thompson performing like Batch did in a pinch. Skylar’s likely more liable to perform like Kruczek did in ’76, though back then the Steeler D was dominant.
