A Letter From the Editor: The Draft is the best the NFL has to offer

The National Football League is by far the biggest, and most successful, professional sports league in the United States. Some might say they are encroaching on some of the more global games and leagues.

One of the things which makes the NFL so great is they know how to market their product. They can take something as simple as a schedule release and make it a must-see event.

Even the league’s hype train of a regular season is carefully crafted and often times manipulated to make sure there are as many eyeballs on their product as possible. Of course, the culminating event of the Super Bowl would have many believing this would be the largest event of the entire league year.

But I wholeheartedly disagree with that sentiment.

To me, the biggest, and best, event is none other than the annual NFL Draft. This 3-day selection process hasn’t just become a spectacle for even the average fan, but a culmination of hours upon hours of meticulous work by those “draftniks” everywhere.

The fact it is three days isn’t what separates it from the pack though. What separates it from the other events, even actual games, is what it provides to all 32 fan bases.

Hope.

For these three days, all fan bases have the hope of a brighter future.

For a team like the Carolina Panthers, maybe this is this is the draft which will change the team’s culture.

In the Buffalo Bills case, this could be the draft which gets them over the hump and in a Super Bowl.

As for a team like the Steelers, fans are wondering what direction the team is headed as they seem to be in a state of limbo currently.

I could go on, but you can see why I feel the way I feel about the draft. The Super Bowl is a spectacle which draws millions and millions of viewers, but are all 32 fan bases fully engaged?

Not at all.

The hope the draft provides might dissipate quickly, but for these three days hope springs eternal.

The hope of change. The hope of new beginnings. The hope of a different outcome than what they’ve seen in the past.

No other event provides this type of hope for the entire league and their fans, and that is what makes it the best the NFL has to offer.
