2025 NFL Mock Draft: Determining all the Pittsburgh Steelers selections
On Tuesday night’s SCN podcast of The Scho Bro Show, we held a mock draft simulation where those in attendance as part of our live chat on YouTube, Facebook, or X got to chime in to help make the Steelers picks. The simulation was done through profootballnetwork.com (PFN) and used their predictive rankings to select the other 31 NFL franchise’s picks while we chose those of the Steelers.
Before getting into the selections, we realize the chances of getting any, let alone all, of the selections correct is a very long shot. In last year‘s exercise where the Steelers made seven selections, we picked one player correctly, Zach Frazier at pick 51. The previous year, we correctly chose Joey Porter Jr. to be selected by the Steelers, but we took him as our top pick, not the Steelers second. The draft plays out in strange ways, so players who were available in certain positions in this simulation will possibly be gone on draft night. This is what makes watching the draft so exciting and entertaining as you never know what is going to happen.
Additionally, remember that this was a simulation and that our options were based off of players who could have already been selected by other teams. In years past, some were quick to comment on the podcast listing out all the players we should have taken in the simulation. To nobody’s surprise, the first five players they listed had already been drafted before the Steelers had the opportunity to take that player where they suggested.
So here are the selections taken by an attempted consensus of SCN viewers in the live chat. Note this draft was not including any possible trade up scenarios, but we did entertain trade down offers in the first three rounds.
Round 1, Pick 28: Kenneth Grant, DL, Michigan
Note: We accepted a trade to move down seven spots. Although the offer was presented to move back 23 spots to pick 44 while adding a third-round picks as well as a 2nd, 3rd, and 5th round picks next year (which didn’t help much in this exercise), we went with trading down seven spots and swapped out fifth-round pick (156) for a second-round pick (60) from the Detroit Lions.
When The Steelers were on the clock, there was no player available that blew us out of the water. If someone would have fallen, we likely would have stayed and made the pick. Both Derrick Harmon and Nick Emmanwori were gone, but that was about it. There were a lot of options that seemed fairly equal and we decided to explore the trade offers. Although it was tempting to move all the way back to 44 to grab three more picks next year, it didn’t help with this exercise and therefore the live chat felt that the move back of seven spots to gain a second for a fifth was the best choice.
What was interesting is that many of the same options were there for the Steelers. Two quarterbacks were off the board as Cam Ward went first and Shedeur Sanders fell in 19 with the Giants trading up in front of the Steelers to grab him. But all other options that were there at 21 were still there. Cornerback Jahdae Barron was available as was running back Omarion Hampton. But after I made the case that the Steelers would still have good options at running back later, the live chat came to a consensus to fix the trenches on the defensive side of the ball and had to choose between Walter Nolan and Kenneth Grant. Ultimately, we went with the massive player in Grant to help sure up the Steelers run defense.
Round 2, Pick 60: Jayden Higgins, WR, Iowa St.
When pick 60 came up, the top two players available according to PFN were quarterbacks. Both Jaxson Dart and Jalen Milroe were available, and I was not opposed to the Steelers taking one of them with the pick we had just gained as an unexpected bonus. But the live chat was having nothing up. A very good case was made to have a replacement lined up for George Pickens after 2025. A large portion of the live chat got on board so we selected Jayden Higgins.
Round 3, Pick 83: Cameron Skattebo, RB, Arizona St.
This one took a good bit of discussion as well, but after getting a defensive tackle and a wide receiver, it felt like all the best value plays that were available were those two positions. I thought Steelers fans would jump all over Skattebo as that’s all I heard about in January. There wasn’t anything else that jumped out so Skattebo ended up being the choice.
Round 4, Pick 123: Joshua Farmer, DT, Florida St.
This one was interesting. The talk of quarterback was all the rage, but Will Howard, a player I was looking for at this pick, was off the board before the Steelers third round pick. Other options that were left were Kyle McCord and Dillon Gabriel. Once again, someone from the live chat made the case of making this the year to take care of the defensive side of the ball in the trenches. So in round four, we double-dipped ta defensive tackle and chose Joshua Farmer.
Round 6, Pick 185: Dillon Gabriel, QB, Oregon
I kind of insisted on this pick. Based on PFN‘s rankings, he was by far the best player left. Additionally, I didn’t see the Steelers going through the draft without taking a quarterback since they only have two on the roster. For that reason, Dylan Gabriel became the obvious choice this late in the draft.
Round 7, Pick 229: Craig Woodson, S, California
It was not easy to come up with the Steelers last draft pick. We looked at a number of positions, but if the ones that Steelers seemed like they might want to add were mainly players left that would be more likely to be signed as undrafted free agents. There wasn’t anything that really stood out at guard, cornerback, or anything else. While we considered a linebacker from Penn State, ultimately when someone asked about Craig Woodson it was a name I was familiar with as I’ve heard him as a late pick to the Steelers in other places. No one was overly opposed to the selection and it made sense to take at least one defensive back, so our draft was complete.
So there are the six selections from the live chat of The Scho Bro Show this past Tuesday. How do you think we did? How many of these draft picks could you see realistically landing with the Steelers? As always, feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments below.
If you’d like to listen to the entire show to see what other options were available, or just to hear me butcher the pronunciation of players’ names, the podcast is available below:
If the draft played out this way and Jaxson Dart was available, I think I’m taking the chance on him. The WR picked doesn’t sound like a sure replacement for Pickens, rather another four year player who moves on when his time is up. Reminds me of the feel for James Washington before he was drafted.
Dart may not pan out, but the risk of missing a potential franchise QB that could be obtained with a 2nd round pick that cost the team nothing to take a possible starter at receiver isn’t one I’d be willing to take. Just my opinion. It’s also not really based on any in-depth analysis. I’m sure there is someone who could make the opposite case.
I ran through the simulator just now. I traded back a couple times. I perhaps should not have made the first trade, as trading out of the first cost me the chance to grab one of the top DLs we’ve been discussing. What I ended up with:
Jaxson Dart (QB, Ole Miss) at 53
Kevin Winston Jr (S, PSU) at 84
DJ Giddens (RB, Kansas St) at 96 (note: Skattebo was there too, if you prefer him)
Donte Thronton (WR, Tenn) at 123
Rylie Mills (DT, Notre Dame) at 156
Zah Frazier (CB< UTSA) at 167
Cam Jackson (DT, Fla) at 185
Carson Vinson (OT, Alabama A& M) at 229
Tampa’s 2nd, 3rd, and 5th round picks in 2026
Pretty nice overall, I think. Just for discussion:
Love Grant as a Steeler pick (nudging Benton to the side opposite Cam, I assume) and if this opportunity to move down and recover a 2nd round pick presents itself, I’d go for it.
Like Higgins but am not sure I’d take him at 60 if I have confidence in Pickens for 2025; maybe, but I’d also consider Dart if the Steelers are nuts about him and/or take a look at available RBs before deciding.
If they haven’t gone RB by 83, I’m good with Skattebo. If they have, I’d look WR or DB.
I like Farmer; would also consider OL here and DL with the following pick, particularly if we already have Grant.
I’m not big on the late round QB, though Gabriel makes sense if this is the spot. He won’t play this year unless everyone else is hurt and/or the season is shot, is unlikely to beat out Rudolph or a high 2026 pick next year, and I’m not nuts about having a low 2025 pick and a 2026 rookie with Mason in the middle for next season unless other moves are made to signal an extensive rebuild. If he’s destined to be a camp arm I’d rather repurpose the pick and sign someone shortly after the draft. Might take my second DL or a DB here.
Fine with Woodson; the further down the list we go, the less there is to argue about.
Mocks are fun. I did a couple today. The first one I moved out of 1.21 and picked up of picks from Jacksonville. Turned out ok. Then I did a stick and pick and it ended up with D. Harmon, J Millroe, C. Lundt, J. Caldwell, RJ Harvey and Z. Frazier. So, I got DT, NT, QB, OT, RB, and CB. I like that mix of guys. I did do a late round trade (gave up 123 and 229 to get 132 and 169). I think I would be happy to get those six guys
I actually really like this draft. If it played out this way, I would be really happy. Love Grant, Skattebo, and Farmer in particular.
I worry how long Skattebo is for the league. He takes a lot of punishment.
