2025 NFL Draft Results: Steelers select NT Yahya Black with 5th round pick
Entering the 2025 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers had a number of draft needs that they needed to address. The Steelers don’t possess a full allotment of draft picks after trading for DK Metcalf, and there were several positions which would be considered a glaring need on their roster.
With six total picks, the following positions could be viewed as a priority entering the selection process: quarterback, wide receiver, cornerback, and even safety. Those positions, and more, were positions of need to help the black-and-gold get to the next level in 2025. There have been numerous thoughts and debates regarding what the team will do in Round 3 of the NFL Draft.
When the dust settled, the Steelers selected Yahya Black out of Iowa with their 5th Round pick in the draft, this after trading back in the round.
After trading back in the fifth round, the #Steelers will take Iowa NT Yahya Black.
Senior Bowl standout and another pre-draft visitor. One of my favorite interviews in this class, as well. https://t.co/c6U9v7cat9

As for more as Black as a prospect, here is a breakdown, courtesy of NFL.com:
Overview
A massive nose tackle with high-end traits, Black’s run plugging can run hot and cold as he fails to anchor with flat feet sunk deep into the ground when attacked on an angle. He can separate and neutralize the block to messy the gap when his pad level is right and he’s one-on-one. Black lacks snap quickness and range, so he’s much more space-eater than playmaker. The size and traits will be coveted, but Black lacks rush and is a little inconsistent at controlling the point. He might have a ceiling as a rotational big man.
Strengths
- Massive frame is bulky but proportional.
- Possesses a 7-foot wingspan and huge hands.
- Able to muddy up the middle when splitting the double team.
- Uses length to extend and work around the blocker.
- Plays with firm control of single blockers when his pad level is good.
Weaknesses
- Below-average balance and ends up on the ground too often.
- Lacks a twitchy shed to get rid of blockers when it’s time to tackle.
- Zone blocks can reach and easily seal him.
- Below-average snap quickness and short-area movements.
- Will offer little help as an NFL pass rusher.

Wow. Plus a semi early six.
Fills a want. Yahya may win the opportunity to defeat Linderbaum, which is good by me.
Ready to start yelling “YAHYA!” at my TV screen!
Dependable player, and terrific kid. No drama or surprises, shows up and gives max effort every day. Teammates and coaches loved him.
