2025 NFL Draft QB ‘Quick Hitters:’ Mini Scouting Reports on Top Day 2 Passers
Over the past four months, I have provided you all more detailed scouting reports on the top prospects in this draft. However, due to time constraints that come along with finishing your final semester of college, working, and serving in church ministry, I was unable to write detailed scouting reports for many of the players I have rated in the 40-125 range of this draft. The intention of today’s article is to get you mildly familiar with the best prospects who will still be available in Rounds 2-4.
Today, we will take a closer look at the quarterbacks.
*Note: Players who I have already written full scouting reports for will not be featured in these articles. You may access those on my position rankings article, which may be accessed HERE.
Kyle McCord | QB | Syracuse | 6’3″, 218 lbs
- Improved tremendously in terms of ball placement and processing in 2024
- Above-average arm with enough athleticism to leave the pocket and gain positive yardage with his legs
- Questionable decision-making when throwing under duress or outside the pocket
- Struggled against tougher Big Ten competition in 2023
Tyler Shough | QB | Lousiville | 6’5″, 219 lbs
- Good combination of arm strength and athleticism
- Mentally tough and never gives up on a play
- Gets through progressions well and doesn’t stare down his target
- Long injury history; has only started for one full season in college and is 25 years old
Will Howard | QB | Ohio State | 6’4″, 236 lbs
- Sturdy frame, solid arm, and confident passer with good poise in the pocket
- Sound footwork and great ball placement
- Very predictable as a passer
- Fails to fit the ball into tight windows due to a lack of elite zip
Quinn Ewers | QB | Texas | 6’2″, 214 lbs
- Elite competitor with outstanding toughness and grit
- Great “timing thrower” who can be dangerous when he gets into a rhythm
- Solid athlete who can make plays outside the pocket
- Not a great arm and seriously lacks zip on throws over the middle of the field
Dillon Gabriel | QB | Oregon | 5’11”, 205 lbs
- Great poise inside the pocket
- Great timing passer who is incredibly efficient on zone-reads
- Undersized and lacks elite arm strength
- Most of his “big” throws were due more to busted coverages than they were due to ball placement
I like Shough but the age thing while not a huge deal is a little worrisome. You are essentially losing one contract if he hits.
Maybe take a look at McCord but he is more of a project, I think.
The other guys are all meh to me. I don’t really want to waste a pick on a guy whose ceiling is serviceable back up.
If a day 2 QB hits, I don’t care if I only have him for few years that’s still a big win! If he was a hit and a QB until he was 35 that still a decade of production. His age is not an issue. His injury history is.
You hit all the points I wanted to. Nothing for me to do but hit the plus symbol.
I would agree with that.
McCord would be worth it if he’s there in the 4th. Once you get to that point, if he’s at least a really good backup, you can justify taking a QB.
