2024 Steelers Exit Interviews: Dan Moore Jr. and Nate Herbig

The Pittsburgh Steelers 2024 NFL season has come to a close. Because the Steelers are among the 31 teams who did not finish fulfilling their ultimate goal, they are in the process of wrapping up their season and moving forward into 2025.

Since the Steelers conduct exit interviews with all their players, and the fact I have done these articles in the past, we thought we would do them yet again here at Steel Curtain Network. By outlining two players each day, we will be able to look at their season in retrospect as well as looking toward the future. Since Coach Tomlin has previously stated he starts his interviews with rookies and those heading into free agency, we will attempt to do the same to some degree. To start, we will pair the most recent draftees with another player at the same position (if possible) as we work through this process to eventually cover the entire Steelers roster.

Next up are offensive linemen Dan Moore Jr. and Nate Herbig.

Dan Moore Jr.

Position: Offensive Tackle
Years with the Steelers: 4
Years in the NFL: 4
Contract Status: Free Agent
Contract Details: Contract expiring with no dead money.
Games played in 2024: 17 regular season
Games started in 2024: 17 regular season
Snaps (regular season): 1,113 (offense), 19 (special teams)
PFF score: 67.2 (42nd of 81)
Notable stats: Moore had 4 penalties called on him in 2024. According to PFF he surrendered 12 sacks and 41 total QB pressures.

Notes: Only missing two starts through four seasons, one would think the Steelers having a fourth round draft pick playing that much at left tackle would be a highly valued asset. But most Steelers fans would be upset if they kept Moore rather than let him move onto his next stop. Severely out playing his draft position, Dan Moore gave the Steelers somewhat adequate play at the left tackle position. But as it has always been since Moore won the job his rookie season, he has always been in an upgradable position which the Steelers need to make sure they have done.

Nate Herbig

Position: Interior Offensive Line
Years with the Steelers: 2
Years in the NFL: 6
Contract Status: Free Agent
Contract Details: Contract expiring with no dead money.
Games played in 2024: 0 regular season
Games started in 2024: 0 regular season
Snaps (regular season): None (5 preseason)
PFF score: N/A (76.2 in the preseason)
Notable stats: Herbig was injured before the start of the 2024 regular season. He only played 5 snaps in the Steelers first preseason game.

Notes: Tearing his rotator cuff in the first preseason game, Nate Herbig came into camp as the Steelers top option at center. It’s debatable how long Herbig would have held that job over Zach Frazier had he been healthy. If the price tag is still $4 million a season for Herbig like it was two years ago, I don’t see him back in Pittsburgh. But if he can be close to a league minimum deal for interior offensive line depth, then let him join his brother in training camp.
